Maybank- Chair of Entrepreneurship

The establishment of the Maybank Entrepreneurship Char is one of the long-term plans to make UMK the center of excellence and a leader in the field of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial culture at the local, national, and international levels. At the beginning of the establishment of this Chair, UMK had appointed YBhg. Tan Sri Dr Mohd Nadzmi bin Salleh as the first Incumbent of the Maybank Chair. Next, UMK has appointed Dr. John Alver Dobson of Clark University as the second Incumbent of the Maybank Entrepreneurship Chair effective March 2019 until January 2022.

Under this program, various activities have been planned with Dr. John Dobson during his tenure as the Incumbent of the Maybank Entrepreneurship Chair including the Entrepreneurship Teaching and Learning Strengthening Workshop known as Develop Your Model of Entrepreneurship (DYME). The objective of this program is to strengthen the education and research agenda based on entrepreneurship in UMK. The first DYME workshop was held in July-August 2020 (6 sessions) with the participation of entrepreneurship lecturers at UMK. Next, the data collection process was conducted in October 2020 until January 2021 (beginning, middle and end of the semester) to evaluate the effectiveness of existing entrepreneurship education in UMK.

The second DYME workshop was conducted throughout the month of September 2021 with more participants from lecturers at UMK. Another group of researchers was formed with some outside of the entrepreneurship subject. It posed a challenge but also an opportunity to develop the entrepreneurial culture in UMK outside the scope of only entrepreneurship-based subjects. Next, the second phase of the data collection process was conducted in October 2021 until January 2022.

Below is an image from an article that Dr. John is working on the current impact of EE courses on UMK students' intentions. The result is a flat line, in other words using business plans and models, does not improve a students' intention to become an entrepreneur. The DYME methodology is proven to increase student entrepreneurship. Once you apply this methodology you will see a dramatic increase in student entrepreneurship.
